Guests decide fast, and they decide on photos. The order you put them in is free to change and makes a real difference to what guests see first. Here's how to sequence your gallery, based on what Airbnb says about photos.
Why the order matters
Airbnb's Help Center is direct about it: "The first 5 photos are the most important because they're prominently displayed on your listing. Make sure the first one is amazing—that's the large one that shows up in search." Your cover photo competes against every other listing in the results, and your first five do most of the selling once someone taps in.
Airbnb also builds a photo tour that sorts your photos by room, and it asks that every room or space has at least one photo so it can appear in the tour. Within the photo tour you can reorder the first five photos on your cover page.
The order we recommend
- Cover: your single best wide shot. Usually the exterior, the view, or the pool or hot tub, whichever is the reason people book. If your interior is the star, use the main living space. Never a bathroom, a close-up or a graphic.
- Photo 2: the standout feature. If the cover is the exterior, slot 2 is the hot tub, the view from the deck or the game room.
- Photo 3: the main living space. Where the group will spend time together.
- Photo 4: the kitchen or dining area. Especially for families and groups.
- Photo 5: the best bedroom. Usually the primary bedroom, made up and bright.
- Then the rest of the tour: remaining bedrooms, bathrooms, outdoor spaces, then details and the neighborhood.
What makes a cover photo work
Airbnb's photo guide recommends:
- Horizontal photos. Images are cropped into squares in search results, and listing pages display photos in landscape mode.
- Natural light. Shoot when rooms get the most light, open the window coverings and turn off the flash. If it's still dark, turn on the lights.
- Shoot straight ahead at eye level, without tilting the lens up or down, so guests get a realistic view.
- Edit lightly. Adjust brightness and contrast, and straighten or crop as needed.
- High resolution. Airbnb's photo guide says at least 1200 × 800 pixels (its Help Center gives 1024 × 683 as the minimum); bigger is better.
Captions: the most skipped quick win
Airbnb suggests writing captions that explain what a photo doesn't show, like how many people a table seats, where a room sits in the floor plan, or which popular amenities are in the kitchen. A good caption turns a nice photo into an answer.
Common photo-order mistakes
- A bathroom or a close-up as the cover or in the first three.
- Listing a hot tub, pool or view in the title but burying the photo at number 14.
- Five shots of the same room in a row before guests see anything else.
- Floor plans, maps or text graphics early in the gallery.
- Rooms with no photo at all, which Airbnb says keeps them out of the photo tour.
Our free listing score checks your cover and first five photos from a simple list ("1 exterior, 2 hot tub, 3 living room…"). The $49 audit goes further: a person looks at your actual photos and sends you a new order.
